Could you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Jonathan Lee nicknamed Jono, just turned 21 recently. I’ve been serving in Kuala Lumpur Baptist Church as a drummer for 3 years, and have just recently went to Brisbane to further my studies – it’s a shame I won’t be able to join the 50hours drumming. I got saved when I was 15 during a youth camp and back then I thought guitar was cool.. not until I started drumming!
How did you find out about Drummerforchrist.com?
From one of my friend whose brother is a featured drummer in Drummerforchrist.com
How long have you been playing drums?
I started playing drums when I was 16 but I wasn’t committed back then because I playing guitar too, so drums was pretty much my secondary instrument until I finished the SPM examinations, I started drumming more and loved every bit of it.
What do you practice in drums?
Stickings, beats, and playing with songs. Currently using the Mel Bay’s Complete Modern Drum Set by Frank Briggs. I try to be creative and play something else other than the textbook stuffs during practice.
How do you improve yourself besides practicing?
I watch videos of other drummers and try to catch the gist of their style, and try to apply it when I play. I attend lots of drum clinics as well. They are really helpful for all drummers to get motivated by the clinician and to learn what the clinicians regard as the most essential part of drumming. The most memorable one was the Dom Famularo drums clinic held in Yamaha Music Kelana Jaya last year.
How do you keep yourself spiritually fit?
Quiet time is an essential part of every believer’s spiritual life and that is not to be taken for granted. I make it a point to attend church, CF and youth regularly to hear from God.
Is there any particular drum and cymbal brand you play with?
I play with the Roland TD-3KV at home and Pacific drums in church. Cymbals are mixed in church.
Please explain a little about your drum kit and cymbals (if any)
Just the ordinary TD-3KV in my house. The church kits are the normal 14”snare, 13”/14”toms and 16”floor toms by pacific (I don’t know the specific model) with a Paiste 18”ride cymbal, 16” crash, 10”Zildjian K custom splash and a 15”crash.
What advice would you give to young drummers who is serving or intended to serve in the worship department?
Keep up the passion and flame for God. Our talents come from God and we should multiply and use it to glorify His name and to extend His Kingdom.
What do you like to do besides drums?
I like sports: Futsal, swimming, table tennis, cycling etc. Like to play computer games and listening to music too.
Lastly, in your own words, how would you encourage more drummers to this website?
The website pulls together and unites all the Christian drummers that desire to serve God with the talents given by God. I encourage all the Christian drummers to offer their full support to drummerforchrist.com so that this may be not only the place for Christian drummers, let it be a bridge for those who has yet to know Him to Salvation.
