Could you tell us a little about yourself?
I am a drum teacher and have been teaching drums for over 8 years. My background is marketing and even though I have been in the workforce for about 10 years and came out as an independent Marketing Consultant, I found my passion in drums and ministering through teaching. There is still a lot to do for the drum world in Malaysia as it’s still in its infancy stage. I teach from my home, so that gives me a lot of time to work my other responsibilities around it. I love cooking and decorating among other things

Which church do you attend? And in what area are you serving, if any?
I am attending SIB P.J. Since I am new to this church, I am currently not involved in any ministries yet but I attend church and home cell regularly. I have been in the worship ministry for over 19 years, but that was in other churches.

How did you find out about Drummerforchrist.com?
From Lim Kok yen, and Arthur Kam who introduce me to Vince who is the organizer for Drummer for Christ.

How long have you been playing drums?
20 years

What do you practice in drums?
Quite a lot. But will mention a few; Basic rudiments such as singles, ( I carry my practice pad around often and play in between free times) double bass pedal exercise, books such as Thomas Lang creative control, Unreel drumbook ( featuring Vinnie Colaiuta ), songs by Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta etc.

How do you improve yourself besides practicing?
Listen to a lot of differing styles when driving or during free time. Read modern drummer magazine and watch videos by professional drummers.

How do you keep yourself spiritually fit?
I put God first in the morning. I spend an hour on quiet time and half an hour on the word before I do anything else. I occasionally take a retreat to be with God a few days to draw strength and direction from him.

Is there any particular drum and cymbal brand you play with?
I am not particular, but Zildjians are my favorites. But have Sabians and Istanbul among others

Please explain a little about your drum kit and cymbals (if any)
I have two drum sets. One is my personal and the other for teaching. The professional kit which is my personal kit is a Pearl Masters Custom Birch. Toms are 8”, 10”, 12” 14” and 16”. Bass 20”. Snare 14X5.5”. matador bongos and pearl drum timbale. Cymbals are 14” Sabian stage hats, 10” Istanbul X hats, 20” Sabian AAX ride, 18” Istanbul China, 16” HH Sabian crash, Sabian Paragon splash 10”, A custom Zildjian splash 12”. 8” Turk Istanbul bell. Pedals are Pearl eliminator double pedal,  Eliminator X hat remote, Eliminator hi hat, single for jam block. My drum kit is not set up the conventional way. I keep my 8” and 10” closer on the left as I use them a lot. 12” tom is remote towards my left after the timbale. I have a gap for the ride cymbal between the 10”  and 14”tom for jazz and ease of playing. I put my remote X hat pedal on the right of my main bass pedal for special effects such as playing two hats in 16 triplets Ostinato over a solo. (I have just changed my set up so its not exactly as in the pictures.)

What advice would you give to young drummers who is serving or intended to serve in the worship department?
Excel in your skill. There is no limit to what you can do on the drums. Listen to other musicians in the worship team and learn to serve the music. Practice your songs thoroughly at home before meeting for the worship practice. Don’t be an exhibitionist unless called for. Develop the ability to have a  deep pocket in groove. Set aside time everyday to do some woodshedding. Always be sensitive to the Holy Spirit when playing. As Akira Jimbo said,” when practicing, practice technically, but when playing, play from your heart”.  King David choose the best musicians for the courts of the Lord. David said “I will not offer the Lord anything that cots me nothing”. Don’t short change God. Don’t offer God anything less than the very best you can give him. Because he gave his very best to you, his son and along with him is still continuing to give the best to you. When the best musician was sought after in the land to appease King Saul, David was chosen. David was practicing for an opportunity that never existed. If you are faithful, God is faithful in opening doors of great opportunities for you.

What do you like to do besides drums? Cooking, gardening, interior decorating, reading, fitness.

Lastly, in your own words, how would you encourage more drummers to this website?
By encouraging the current members to serve in any which way they can. Such as video and photography, information and other things required. Encouraging their drum friends to visit the website and support through sponsorship, help and prayer. We could also have regular clinics by our local professional drummers for a time of gathering and fellowship.
