Could you tell us a little about yourself?
My name’s Jonathan and I’m 17 this year. I’m currently studying as a Form 5 student in Sekolah Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, Klang. I’m from a family of four. I grew up listening to classical music as my brother is a violinist and he used to play for KLSO. My mum was a music teacher in a primary school. They were the people who impacted me heavily to pick up a musical instrument. I started with piano and after few years of playing the piano, only I started with drums.
How did you find out about Drummerforchrist.com?
Someone from the website was spreading the news on the 50 hours of drumming in the Klang Interschool Rally blog so I decided to take a look.
How long have you been playing drums?
This year’s my 5th year of playing the drums.
What do you practice in drums?
I practice mostly on my single, double and peri diddle strokes. I also spend most of time maintaining a constant beat with my double bass pedal.
How do you improve yourself besides practicing?
I think up of beats and tapping the beat. I also make funny noises with my mouth to get a certain beat I like. I listen to a particular song I need to play when I don’t have the time to practice.
How do you keep yourself spiritually fit?
I read the Bible and I pray a lot. I set my mind to glorify His name only. I also keep my spiritual life fit with prayer and fastings.
Is there any particular drum and cymbal brand you play with?
Yes I do. I have a Pearl Export Radical drum set. I also use Zildjian ZBT starter pack cymbals.
Please explain a little about your drum kit and cymbals (if any)
Bought my drum kit last year. It’s a basic 5-piece drum set with a normal 14” snare, 13” and 14” toms and a 16” floor toms. My hardware are all Pearl 800W. I’m using Zildjian ZBT starter pack because I wasn’t thinking about investing in cymbals yet. I have a Pearl Eliminator Double Bass Pedal and also a Pearl Signature Snare Joey Jordison.
What advice would you give to young drummers who is serving or intended to serve in the worship department?
Well, my advice is to pray and set your heart, your mind, and your soul to glorify His name with the talents He has given to you. Remember that your technique and skills playing the drums are all secondary. What God wants is not your skills, but your utmost reliance and sacrifice to Him USING your skills. Always remember to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to work in you.
Lastly, in your own words, how would you encourage more drummers to this website?
This website is a very good influence for Christian drummers and is a place where we drummers can discuss and share about anything relating to drums, and also anything relating about worshipping the Lord with our talents. Not forgetting the motivation one can get from fellow drummers for God.
